For years, SkyView Observatory atop Seattle’s Columbia Tower was a hidden gem. It cost just $5 to get to the observation deck at the 73rd floor, 902 feet above the city, for a 270-degree view of the skyline, mountains, islands and Puget Sound.
With a recent $25 million renovation, there’s now an entire experience behind this great view. And the view now extends 360 degrees, completely unobstructed.
There’s a grand entrance and gift shop, and a new food and drink menu in the observation deck that invites lingering. You might spend time taking it all in over lunch or a cocktail and a snack. There are even options for kids. The deck is inside the tower with no outside options, but the glass doesn’t detract from the views.
There are new placards that tell you what you’re looking at and explain bits of Seattle trivia, or give photography tips for getting great shots through the glass without triggering a reflection.
The new digs also mean a higher price tag for admission, which now runs to $20. But it’s well worth the cost, as these views just can’t be beat, even by the iconic Space Needle, which sits at a lower elevation and is removed from the downtown fray.
