Southwest Safety Issues

Until April of this year, Southwest had one of the best safety records in the flight business. Tragedy took hold; however, with a series of horrible accidents that resulted in the first fatality in Southwest’s 47-year history.

In light of this accident, Congress is lobbying to maintain higher standards for pilot training with the 1,500-hour rule. This rule requires pilots have 1,500 hours of flight experience on record before taking the reigns of commercial flights.

Since April 2018, Southwest has not been in the news too much. They issued $5,000 checks to the passengers on board the fatal flight 1380 and have cooperated with the Federal Aviation Administration, who initiated an audit  of the safety conditions of the airline. This calm approach on behalf of the airline is not surprising since it is still one of the leading airlines in the country and is cooperating with the proper authorities.

One has to wonder how the future of the airline looks. It has already been revealed the head of the Southwest’s mechanics union voiced repeated concerns about safety that were not prioritized by management just weeks before flight 1380 resulted in tragedy. More will be revealed in the coming months.
