Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, has become something of a phenomenon in recent years. It’s an excellent sport for people who love to be out on the water but aren’t exactly thrilled with the idea of getting plowed over by a wave. Instead of riding on a surfboard, SUP involves standing on a board and paddling around the water much like you would in a kayak, just on your feet.
Australia is one of the foremost SUP spots in the world, thanks to calm waters and some fairly epic scenery. Perth stands as one of the favorites in the country and plays hosts to many of the world’s SUP competitions. Swan River is a great locale for beginners with ample opportunity to take lessons from the locals and rent some gear.
Meanwhile in Queensland, beginners and seasoned vets love to spend a lazy day floating on a board down the Cairn’s River witnessing sweeping rainforest views. Just watch out for the wildlife. They say in Australia even the bugs can kill you.
Surfing waves is even possible on a paddleboard if you’re feeling adventurous. Geraldton, north of Perth, hosts annual events and competitions for locals and visitors from around the world.
