Large hotel chains have their perks, as do boutique hotels. For a truly unique, memorable experience, though, consider venturing out to some of the world’s most remote accommodations.

Drive two hours from the already remote Colorado town of Telluride through the San Juan Mountains to Dunton Hot Springs, where you can stay in one of 13 isolated, handmade cabins nestled in a beautiful alpine valley. Soak in mineral-rich hot springs at the resort’s 1800s bathhouse, and enjoy the peace and quiet that only a remote hotel can offer.

Make acquaintance with the puffins in Snæfellsbær, Iceland, at the remote Hótel Búðir, surrounded by nothing by lava fields, volcanoes and the Atlantic Ocean. Rooms are simple and spare, but cozy and quiet. Book a deluxe room to gaze out at the Snæfellsjokull National Park, and enjoy stunning stargazing.

With a focus on serenity, wellness and sustainability, Rosalie Bay Resort in Dominica is a remote gem, offering quaint cottages along a rocky beach with views of the Rosalie River and Morne Trois Pitons foothills. All furniture is handmade from natural materials, and the resort uses wind turbine, solar panels and on-site water filtration. From March through October, guests have the opportunity to help monitor turtles nesting on the beach.

For mountain lovers, book a stay at the husband- and wife-owned Winterlake Lodge in Alaska, accessed via a one-hour bush-plane ride from Anchorage. Enjoy hiking, fishing, dogsledding and other curated adventures, while taking in the solitude of the rugged Alaska wilderness.

You know your hotel is truly remote when you need a horse, mule or good hiking boots to get there. The Mountain Lodges of Peru are nestled among the surrounding mountains, featuring a modern design with ancient Inca architecture with direct vistas of Salkantay Peak, one of the most important mountains in Inca mythology. The lodges provide the ideal home base for trekking expeditions to Machu Picchu.
