Hoping to save a little cash when booking your next trip for 2023? There may be some destinations you want to avoid. A new study from SquareMouth predicts the most expensive travel destinations for this year. Here’s what it found:
Travelers hoping to avoid expensive destinations will want to steer clear of trips to Africa, Oceania and Antarctica. In 2022, the study found travelers to these areas spent nearly 50 percent more on trips than travelers did elsewhere. More specifically, the study found trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the most expensive, with an average trip cost of more than $30,000. Some of the other most-expensive destinations found include Botswana, Antarctica, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
Still, even with these high costs, the survey found travel to Oceania destinations like the Marshall Islands was up in 2022, with an average trip cost of more than $12,000. Likewise, Antarctica travel increased by 134 percent in 2022, making it both one of the most expensive, most popular and most desirable destinations to visit.
SquareMouth also found, as the average cost for visiting these destinations goes up, so does the cost of travel insurance. For the study’s top 25 most expensive travel destinations, the average cost of travel insurance premiums was more than $700, or about three times the average cost of travel insurance premiums overall.
