If you’re looking for adventure this spring, you’re not alone. A new study from Squaremouth shows more and more travelers are looking for thrills as they book upcoming trips.
The travel insurance provider asked customers about travel plans for the coming season and noted more than 40 percent said they were traveling to “look for adventure.” Furthermore, online searches for adventure travel insurance policies are up, as are sales for sports- and activities-related travel insurance policies. Squaremouth found most customers are looking for insurance specifically related to hiking or trekking, scuba diving, safari trips, cycling and horse riding.
So, where are these travelers headed off to in search of adventure? Squaremouth also looked at the most popular adventure travel destinations for spring, based on year-over-year sales increases. It found adventure travel policy sales for travel to Australia rose the most, at a near 70 percent year-over-year increase. Other trending adventure travel destinations for spring 2024 include Peru, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Iceland, Nepal, Chile and Costa Rica.
These adventures aren’t coming cheap, though. Squaremouth also looked at travelers’ average trip costs when purchasing adventure travel insurance policies for trips to these locales. Average total trip cost for adventure travel in South Africa was highest, with average costs running around $18,000. Costa Rican adventure trips were the most affordable, on average, at just less than $7,000.
