Trends / Adventure

While many people flock to the beaches of southern Europe for a summer holiday, fans of the outdoors head to the Dolomites.

This impressive mountain range stretches across northeastern Italy, but used to be part of Austria until the first World War. As a result, the area is a fantastic mix of cultures presided over by incredible mountains.

The best way to see the Dolomites is by hiking them, and there are hundreds of trails to choose. Popular choices include the foothills around Lake Iseo, the Croda Rossa mountain and, of course, the Alta Via Dolomiti. This series of high-altitude paths links the peaks of the mountain range, and can be hiked in around two weeks.

The scenery is spectacular, and the culture is fascinating. Instead of holidaying on crowded beaches, take in the fresh mountain air in this forgotten corner of Europe. You’ll most likely be sharing the trails with Italians escaping the scorching summers in Rome and the south, or the few others that are in on the secret.

Flights to the area are most convenient through Bergamo Airport, although Venice, Udine and Verona are all within easy reach. You can spend your holiday hiking, or split your time between the mountains and some of the fascinating ancient cities of the region.
