Traditionally, Central America has flown under the radar as a surfing destination, but things are changing.

From Guatemala to Panama, there are surf spots gaining in reputation on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. For starters, the west coast of Guatemala is becoming increasingly popular, with surf camps popping up at El Paredon. It’s only two hours from Antigua, so you can pop down for the day.

Further south in El Salvador, surfers flock to El Tunco. There are good waves for beginners and experienced surfers, plus the town itself is lively enough to entertain non-surfing members of your group.

Nicaragua is becoming something of a favorite, with surfers flocking to San Juan del Sur. The town turned into a major stop off on the backpacker trail, and there are lots of surfing beaches within easy reach.

Costa Rica has good surfing at the famous Witches Rock, and the laidback atmosphere means you might end up staying longer than you planned. One word of warning, though: Costa Rica is more expensive than neighboring countries.

Panama’s most famous surf spot is on the Caribbean coast at Bocas del Toro. These islands are as famous for partying as they are surfing, so there is something for everyone.
