Thanksgiving is a time to spend with loved ones. The holiday is also synonymous with indulging in lots of tasty, rich food, difficult if you’re trying to watch what you eat. However, it is possible to make it through Thanksgiving while on a diet. Follow our tips to make the most of the holiday, while still sticking to your eating plan.
Don’t Starve Yourself
Eat something small and healthy before the main meal, so you aren’t ravenous by the time dinner rolls around.
Cook for Yourself
If you’re preparing the meal, cook to fit your needs. However, if you are dining at someone’s else’s home, contribute a dish both healthy and that can be shared with the group. This way you’ll know you have at least one guilt-free item to eat. You can warn the host of your dietary needs ahead of time,as well.
Make Smart Swaps
Opt for healthier dishes when assembling your plate. Choose white over dark turkey meat; skip the butter and gravy on top of your mashed potatoes; load up on vegetables instead of bread or stuffing.
Skip the Booze
With wine, beer and cocktails flowing, you can easily loose track of how many glasses and calories you’re consuming. Skip the booze entirely and save those calories for the meal.
Pick One Indulgence
Instead of making it an entire “cheat meal,” indulge in one item you love. Whether it’s a slice of pie, mashed potatoes covered in gravy or a holiday cocktail, let that item be your indulgence for the day.
