Swim With Whale Sharks in Mexico and Central America

The biggest fish in the sea can be found near the Caribbean and Pacific coasts during migration season. Here is where to spot them.

Mexico’s Caribbean coast has regular whale shark sightings from May to September. Starting on the northern tip of the Yucatan peninsula at Isla Holbox, the coast south toward Belize has great spots for swimming with whale sharks. Head to Holbox, Isla Mujeres or Cancun to swim with the gentle giants.

Further south in Belize, Gladden Spit is another top spot for whale sharks. You can also find them on Utila in Honduras, too, although sightings are less frequent.

On the Pacific coast, La Paz in Mexico is a great spot. Stay in Los Cabos and swim with whale sharks off Baja California. You can also find the sharks in Pacific waters off Coiba National Park in Panama and Cano Island in Costa Rica.

Plan your trip to see these amazing creatures up close, but always treat them respectfully. Don’t get too close and never touch them. It can be scary getting so close to such a large animal, but they are gentle and do not attack humans.
