Portland is the largest city in the state of Maine and well worth a visit. It is a great city to explore, jam-packed with history and interesting things to do.

Because of the outdoor nature of many of the activities there, you will find the summer months, late May to late August, are the busiest as the weather tends to be warmer and drier (www.visitportland.com). As the temperature cools, so does the tourism trade, which can give you a whole new experience of this charming city without having to fight through the bustling crowds.

September, with an average high temperate of 76 degrees F and an average low of 53 degrees F is still more than mild enough, and you will get to experience some of the end of summer activities.

There are quaint sidewalks, great food and the Old Port District has been completely rejuvenated. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the Portland Head Light, which dates back to the late 18th century. It is the oldest lighthouse still in continuous use in the United States.

The Children’s Museum of Maine will keep the little ones enthralled with the interactive nature of much of the exhibits, and for those whose feet are hurting after exploring the city, there are popular cruises, where you can sit back and enjoy the stunning views.

September also hosts the County Bluegrass Festival (www.countybluegrass.com), a twice a year event that lasts four days with various camping options available.

September offers the best of both worlds: The number of tourists you need to fight with to get a place to stay is reduced, the weather is still warm enough to not prevent you getting out and about and there is loads to do.
