With a new year comes a new onslaught of ideas for ways to make travel more seamless and enjoyable. This year’s travel trends are mostly technological with a focus on streamlining services and cutting out the middleman. Here are a few tech trends to watch out for in 2018.
Facial recognition during boarding: A few airports are already testing a beta version of this method of boarding passengers in which boarding agents scan a passenger’s face and afterward they are provided with information about that passenger in place of studying a passport. Developers hope this new technology will not only speed up the boarding process but also improve security.
Airport assistance robots: Instead of wasting precious travel time waiting in lines at the check-out counter for simple questions, you may soon be able to aim your queries at a customer service robot that will roam the departures halls of airports. The first version of this robot will debut at Seoul’s Incheon Airport for the Winter Olympics and will be fluent in multiple languages.
Virtual reality: Technology will bring new meaning to the term “staycation.” Virtual reality will soon be a possibility for travelers seeking to explore attractive locations and make a decision about where to go. Those who don’t have the time or resources to travel can feel like they are on vacation with the scenes, sensations and in-depth look virtual reality provides. Users also will be able to view samples of hotel rooms and feel what it is like to sit in a selected airplane seat before booking.
