The Clam Shack

For the first lobster roll of our New England trip last month, we visited The Clam Shack in the adorable coastal town of Kennebunkport. Set on the bridge overlooking the Kennebunk River, the award-winning weathered shack is packed from 11 a.m. to closing with long lines of both locals and tourists waiting to indulge in deep-fried delicacies and cold local beers.

We arrived just as it opened and luckily got a precious parking spot right in front of the venue. After ordering a lobster roll and fried clam roll and picking up some brews in the nearby seafood market, our order was complete a short while later and we found a spot to dine al fresco on a wooden bench overlooking the river.

Paired with a Shipyard Summer Ale and Allagash White, our meal was incredible, boasting briny chunks of mayo- and butter-dressed lobster on a freshly baked bun and clams perfectly fried to the most delicious taste and texture. On par with our food was the incredible view of the river we enjoyed, with local fishermen unloading their haul, mallard ducks trying to get a bite of our food and vacationers kayaking and stand-up paddling boarding. Though the prices were steep, both costing $17.95 each, the sandwiches were well worth it, providing a delicious taste of Maine.

For those who can’t make the trip to Maine but still want to try one of its award-winning rolls, The Clam Shack sells Lobster Roll Kits guaranteed to arrive fresh overnight with one pound of fresh-picked Maine lobster meat, mayonnaise, a half dozen New England-style hot dog rolls, a recipe and greeting card for $75.
