The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Ky., is one of the most historic hotels in the state, with the original hotel opening in 1835. Famous guests have included Charles Dickens and Abraham Lincoln and, during the Civil War, the Galt House was the site of strategy meetings between the Union’s Generals Grant and Sherman. Between its original creation and present day, the Galt House was destroyed twice before the building of the current hotel in the 1970s, which has since been remodeled.
I have had the pleasure of staying at the Galt House for various events in Louisville, as its location is convenient to many of the downtown and waterfront attractions in the city. The suites are spacious and offer plenty of room for extra guests who may want to drop by during your stay. The conservatory is one of my favorite spots in the hotel, as the glass-enclosed room connects the hotel’s two towers and is an excellent space for people watching while you have a drink.
The Galt House hosts many large events throughout the year, including several Derby Day parties, but they’re also well known in the area for their Christmas festivities. Especially fun for kids, the hotel’s Christmas season features elaborate décor, Santa and other holiday characters, dinner shows, a snow play area and regular kid-friendly events from gingerbread house contests to train rides.
Whether you’re looking for accommodations with character in downtown Louisville or somewhere to host your next event, the Galt House will most certainly deliver.
