The Great Mosque of Bursa, or Ulu Camii as it’s officially known, is a magnificent structural and cultural accomplishment every tourist should explore when in town. I had the opportunity to visit the mosque on my recent trip to Bursa, and was left fascinated by the rich historical findings contained within.
Prior to going, I’d suggest reading a guidebook so you knowabout the various artifacts, or even bring one with you, because the actual guides don’t do the best job of explaining things as you go along. They’re jovial enough, though, so it’s entertaining even if you don’t know exactly what’s in front of you.
The walls are adorned with calligraphy and the domes are a sight to behold. It’s utterly breathtaking when you first walk in the door. The quietness of the place is a bit eerie at first, but turns calming after just a few moments. Even if you’re not religious, you’re encouraged to say a prayer and the atmosphere almost requires it.
Both men and women are permitted to enter, though women are required to wear a headscarf and no one should be wearing shoes. A place like this is difficult to describe without seeing firsthand, so definitely make the effort to go next time you’re in town.
