Tips / Travel

Air travel can be a frustrating endeavor. From navigating the airport, to traversing the security lines to simply making a flight on time, most travelers do not have much extra patience. Obnoxious co-passengers can only make these situations worse. That is why it is important to know the proper ways to deal with people like this.

Develop a Positive Relationship with Your Seatmate

As soon as you get settled in your seat, start up a conversation with your seatmate. Helping them put their luggage into the overhead compartment is also a great way to earn their respect and start things off right. By building this relationship, it becomes easier to ask them to refrain from doing something — smacking their gums, listening to music loudly, taking up too much space. They might also be less defensive and more apt to accommodate your needs.

Fight Offenses to Your Senses

If someone nearby has bad breath, offer them gum under the guise of ear-popping prevention. If someone is playing their music too loud or talking on the phone, put on your headphones, even if you aren’t listening to anything. Also, come prepared with a small air freshener in your carry-on to mask unwanted smells.

Stake Your Claim

If you are the first in your row to sit down, make sure you anchor your arm on the shared armrest. When you’re booking your flight, getting a seat in the front of your section will give you more legroom. If all else fails, ask if your seatmate will switch with you so you have the aisle seat.
