Tips / Travel

Golf tournaments are one of the best sporting events for spectators. Fans can get close to their favorite athletes and learn the game unlike any other game. If you’re interested in attending a tournament, follow these tips to make the most of the course.

Hiking and Camping

Some people like to follow their favorite players while others prefer to set up shop at one hole. Staying in one spot can be a relaxing time with a lawn chair and a beer, possibly even a cigar since these are one of the few places you can smoke at a public event. On the other hand, following someone will give you insight into the player’s game.

Pack Smartly

Most tournaments prohibit the use of electronics that make noise, with many downright banning them from the course. Some practice rounds will let you take pictures but none during the actual competition. Be sure to check the weather forecast and pack some rain gear if there might be inclement weather. A poncho will make it a lot easier to get around when everyone is holding umbrellas, but for most tournaments it’s going to be hot, so pack a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat. Comfortable shoes are a must, in addition to binoculars if you really want to enjoy the game.

Have Proper Etiquette

Golf tournaments aren’t like Happy Gilmore, except maybe the FBR Open in Phoenix. Distractions should be kept to a minimum, which means listening to the workers when they raise a hand for quiet. Cheering is allowed after the shot is hit, but don’t taunt the players. In the afternoon, be wary of your shadow in case it’s in the player’s line of sight.
