No matter where your travels take you, one thing is certain: You’re going to need insurance when you get there. Heading overseas without medical coverage is not just risky, it’s flat-out dumb. You could get seriously injured or ill and without insurance there’s no guarantee you’ll receive medical care. Here are some things to look for when choosing the right one.
High Coverage Limit
The most important thing to look for is a high coverage limit. You don’t want to skimp on low coverage and then find yourself laid out in a hospital unable to receive treatment for a surgery you desperately need because your insurance won’t pay for it. Get a minimum of $100,000.
Country Coverage
A lot of insurance plans are country or region specific, but if you’re on the road a lot you want one that covers as many countries as possible. In addition, you never know where a flight might be rerouted to in an emergency and you want to be covered there, too.
Possessions Coverage
Make sure your insurance covers your possessions including electronics and personal property like jewelry, camera, luggage and documents like passports and birth certificates.
Medical Evacuation Coverage
Sometimes, especially in third-world countries, you can develop an injury or illness so severe it can’t be treated in that country at all. Be sure to have insurance that covers medical evacuations to other cities and countries nearby.
Legal Fees
Insurance doesn’t just cover medical emergencies, but also the legal fees associated whether you may or may not be at fault when someone else is involved. Make sure your insurance covers legal aid and referral assistance in an emergency.
