If it’s your first time driving on the left side of the road while positioned on the right side of the car, try to rent a car with the same type of transmission to which you’re naturally accustomed, regardless of the fact you’ll likely be shifting with your left hand for the first time. Practice in the parking lot of the car rental agency before hitting the open road. Once you’re on the road, try to find a quiet neighborhood for additional practice. Don’t head to downtown London as the first thing you do.
For a few obvious tips: Slow down, this is going take some getting used to as you have driven your whole life in the opposite direction. Stay in the left lane when not passing, as the right is generally the faster moving lane.
“Left alive, Dead right,” is probably the most important thing to remember. Right, left, right, rather than the opposite, is how you need to be looking when you pull through and intersection. Your brain will adjust as it’s a simple matter of survival.
