Tips / Safety

This year, 2019, has been the year for women to travel solo, but that doesn’t mean girls don’t still have to take extra measures to keep themselves safe. Traveling alone can have multiple benefits, but it also comes with certain dangers,, especially when you are a female. This is not to say us girls aren’t capable of protecting ourselves, it is just the unfortunate truth we are more vulnerable by ourselves.

If you are planning a solo trip make sure you take a few extra measures to ensure no harm comes to you so you can enjoy your trip and come home with fond memories.

Research your destination well before you plan your trip. Avoid areas that have a high volume of crime against tourists, especially women. But keep in mind no matter how safe a destination is reported to be, it’s still important to stay vigilant.

Make sure your loved ones back home know your travel plans and check in frequently. Don’t go off-script without letting someone know.

Keep your valuables to a minimum and don’t flaunt what you’ve got. Keep your cash tucked away and your expensive jewelry at home.

Make smart decisions and trust your gut. Avoid poorly lit areas after dark and if something doesn’t feel right, follow your instincts and get out of a situation as soon as possible, even if it feels like you’re being rude.

While talking to locals is always the best way to learn about the hidden gems at a destination, don’t let friendly locals lull you into a false sense of security. During your conversations don’t divulge any more than you have to — it’s not a good idea to advertise you are traveling alone.

Is Your Sunscreen Killing the Ocean?

Travelers are already savvy about keeping trash out of oceans and focused on our rising shorelines. But according to MarineSafe, sunscreen is one of the biggest and permanent polluters to our oceans. The common sunscreen ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate are toxic to coral reefs and other marine life. The chemicals are shown to cause coral bleaching that ultimately leaves the coral vulnerable to infection and malnourished. Of course, sunscreen isn’t the only source of pollution in our oceans, but is quickly escalating into a crisis.

Leave Troublesome Rideshare Worries Behind

We can see it now and remember when it happened to us: Watching as the black car icon loops around and around, seemingly endlessly, and our wait time on the rideshare app continually changes. Long wait times and confused drivers are just a few bothersome issues that can nag at rideshare users. Need a solution? Ditch rideshares altogether in favor of renting a car on your next trip.
