Getting ¨off the beaten path¨ is the goal of most modern travelers as the overcrowded tourist attractions have become a major turn-off and travelers seek more original experiences. But what does it really mean to seek out experiences and places out of the norm, and how does a traveler really get to those places of authenticity?
Rent a car or motorbike. The beaten paths of highly visited destinations are typically accessed by public transportation. Rent your own means of transportation to explore what you want at your own pace. When you are at the steering wheel, it´s easier to veer off the road and explore a hidden path to anywhere.
Mingle with the locals. This does not mean chatting up the bartender at a bar near your hotel or beside the city´s biggest attraction. Conversing with the locals takes some effort and maybe a bit of travel outside the city or large town. Language barriers aside, ask the locals about their lives and you may get insight into the history of the area including other spots to visit and explore.
Slow down. Bucket-list travelers have mastered the ability to squeeze in as much as possible within a short period of time, checking off their lists as they go. By slowing down and not rushing through all the sites, you give yourself time to really wander and venture into areas of the city you may not have been able to see if you had stuck to a strict itinerary.
Visiting a new city for the first time can be overwhelming. With so much to see, a walking tour can be an effective way to see a city’s landmarks and learn a thing or two. These U.S. cities offer a variety of walking tours, whether you want to see popular attractions or hidden gems.
Dining is an art, and now that applies to both on the ground and at 35,000 feet thanks to Hainan Airlines’ “Hai Chef” Inflight Artistic Chinese cuisine series, a collaboration with Dong Zhenxiang, a Chinese culinary master also known as Dadong.
Martinique’s artisanal rum scene has been making waves in recent years, with the tiny island nation earning a reputation for producing the best rhum agricole in the Caribbean. The next time you’re in town, be sure to swing by these stops on the Route de Rhums.
Summer is already the season of soaking in the sun, enjoying warm weather with friends and family and skipping off to far-off destinations for vacation. Just add some R&R time at the spa and you have the ultimate reset button. Combine your love of travel and relaxation with a wellness-focused retreat.
For most of us, time in the car is “me time.” You can listen to that podcast you’re captivated by, blast that pop song and sing along at the top of your lungs or listen to the next chapter in that biography e-book you’re almost finished. A road trip only amplifies those opportunities. So, next time you’re traveling by road, take the wheel and take control. Opt for a rental car on your next vacation, rather than a rideshare, taxi or public transportation, and enjoy the open road on your own terms.
