One of the best ways to see the world is through volunteering. Not only are you able to experience new cultures and sights, but you can help those in need while doing it. Just remember to keep these things in mind when deciding to volunteer.
Respect the Culture
The point of volunteering is to help others while learning about their culture, not imposing your own on them. Don’t go into a volunteer experience with an agenda. Instead, go in expecting to learn things about yourself you never knew.
Beware the Words “For Free”
We’ve all heard the saying that nothing in life is free, and that’s certainly true when it comes to travel. If you see something marketing itself as a free trip in exchange for volunteering overseas, it’s likely a scam.
Plan Your Trip
When volunteering you’re going to be spending a lot of time working. That means you won’t have a ton of free time to explore, so plan accordingly. Make sure you know your expected work schedule and plan your adventures accordingly.
Plan a Long Stay
Volunteering works best when done in large doses. While every little bit helps, you’ll get the most out of the experience by sticking around awhile to lend a hand. Aim for volunteer trips that last weeks to months so you know you’re truly making a difference.
