The South American nation of Peru has 1,500 miles of coastline, running from the border with Ecuador in the north to the frontier with Chile in the south. Here are some of the best beaches to visit.
Mancora
This surf town is in the north of the country, and is home to beautiful beaches, good waves and warm water. It’s a popular stop for backpackers and there are plenty of hostels and bars to enjoy.
Punta Hermosa
Get away from the crowded beaches of Lima by driving an hour south to Punta Hermosa, where you’ll have the place more or less to yourself. Try your hand at surfing, but don’t forget a wetsuit.
Paracas
If surfing isn’t your thing, head to the Paracas National Reserve. This wildlife reserve is home to thousands of marine birds of various different species.
Ancon
This bustling seaside resort is popular with Peruvians and tourists alike, with good surfing waves and plenty of other amenities. It’s not the most beautiful, but it’s a lot of fun.
Huanchaco
This small fishing village is now a hot spot for surfers and a popular stop on the backpacking trail. Turn off the road 12 kilometers from the city of Trujillo to enter this surfing paradise.
