Top 5 / Europe

If you don’t know Bjarke Ingels by name, chances are you’ve seen one of his buildings disrupting a city skyline a time of two. Denmark is Bjarke’s homeland, and many of his most eccentric buildings can be found in Copenhagen. If you’re in the city, here are the Top 5 structural wonders from the mind of the master architect.

8 House

There’s nothing traditional about this residential/retail space. The bowtie-shaped building stacks all the elements of an urban neighborhood into horizontal layers connected by a slanted bike path that allows cyclers to go from the street all the way to the 10th-floor penthouses.

Mountain Dwellings

This building merges a parking structure and a housing block with a symbiotic relationship. All the apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views and parking inside the heart of the buildings. Take the time to walk around this one to see it from every angle.

Copenhill

As sci-fi as this sounds, Bjarke is in the process of turning a waste management center into a local and tourist attraction. Opening December 2018, Copenhill will be a futuristic ski slope and recreational hill placed on top of the power plant, complete with a giant chimney puffing out white smoke rings.

Superkilen

This half-mile-long outdoor urban space is divided into three colored neighborhoods (red, black and green) all with parks and recreational areas that play into the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood. You can play around in the Thai boxing ring, take a ride on the slide from Chernobyl, monkey around on the Indian climbing playground and more.

Danish Maritime Museum

About 45 minutes outside of Copenhagen lies the Danish Maritime Museum, resting inside the bones of a 60-year-old dry boat dock carved into the earth. Bjarke won this competitive bid by thinking outside the box, or in this case, the dock, by placing the museum structure below ground.
