Desert Botanical Garden

Set on 140 acres in Phoenix, this garden proves a desert climate can still provide lush plant life. Explore more than 50,000 plants including cacti, wildflowers and local herbs. Open daily, adult admission costs $24.95.

International Rose Test Garden

Technically more of a rose garden than a standard botanical garden, Portland, Ore.’s, garden earns a spot on our list for its unique collection of roses. Free public tours are available Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Missouri Botanical Garden

Opened in 1859, the garden features a Japanese garden, endangered orchids and tropical plant life. Be sure to stop at the Climatron, a geodesic dome used as the conservatory. Open daily, adult admission costs $12.

New York Botanical Garden

Located in the Bronx, the 250-acre space features 50 gardens and more than 1 million living plants in its collection. The garden hosts special exhibitions throughout the year, including an annual orchid show. Hours and admission cost vary by day and season.

United States Botanic Garden

The list wouldn’t be complete without including the garden in our nation’s capital. Established by Congress in 1820, it is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the country.
