It is difficult to spend days in Munich and to run out of things to do and see. The capital of Bavaria is chock-full of museums and parks and beer halls, enough to keep you busy for days. But if you are longing to explore other parts of the region, consider the following five daytrips outside of the city to visit more of this stunning sector of the world.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Nestled in the Alps is one of the region´s most visited attractions. Neuschwanstein Castle has a dark history but its fairy-tale location in the forest emits a romantic appeal that inspired Walt Disney´s well-known castle logo.

A two-hour train ride east leads travelers to the small city of Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for the film The Sound of Music. Popular among visitors, it is possible to escape the crowds and climb to the hilltop fortress for incredible views of the city below.

Nuremberg

Although widespread damage occurred after World War II, Nuremberg rebuilt itself and still maintains the old-world glamour established from the Middle Ages. A 90-minute train ride from Munich takes travelers to the site of the historic Nuremberg Trials where Nazi soldiers were charged for their crimes.

Berchtesgaden

History and scenery buffs should make a point to visit Berchtesgaden, due south of Munich. Once a retreat destination for monks in the 12th century, the mountainous area is also where Adolf Hitler´s retreat, the Eagle´s Nest, is perched high above Germany.

Rothenburg

This small countryside town approximately two-and-a-half hours west of Munich is the world´s most well-preserved medieval town. Home to year-round Christmas shops, visitors can spend hours traveling back in time by wandering the authentic thoroughfares.
