Visiting Europe in the fall season has numerous benefits: fewer crowds, cheaper prices and yet the temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities. If you’re considering a fall European getaway, see below for a few places doing their best to hold onto summer.
The southernmost region of Spain is still warm and sunny through the beginning of December. Enjoy rain-free days strolling along the river in Seville, or take a daytrip to Granada’s spectacular Alhambra where you can spot bits of snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains.
It goes without saying southern Italy is the warmer option, but spots along the Tyrrhenian Sea come with a refreshing sea breeze. Temperatures in cities like Rome and Florence can rest in the 60s and 70s throughout fall. Be sure to make note of any Catholic holidays during which most attractions will be closed.
As one of the southernmost spots in Europe, the island nation of Malta is still relatively unknown to travelers, making it an ideal place to escape the crowds. History dates to prehistoric times, and natural wonders include the Azure Window and underwater caves.
While the Atlantic winds tend to sweep through this city quite fiercely, the Portuguese capital can provide distraction via its steep hills, spectacular architecture and world-famous wine, including the homegrown fortified wine known as port.
If cold weather isn’t an issue, consider this southern region in Germany where the leaves will sport signature fall colors among the snow-capped Alps. Pass through Munich for a visit to the Oktoberfest museum and a liter of beer in any of the city’s heated biergartens.
