Fort Sumter 

Located a short boat ride from downtown Charleston, Fort Sumter is a sea fort. The fort is notable as the site of two battles during the Civil War, including the battle that started the war. Check the website for tour information.

 

Nathanial Russell House 

Shipping merchant Nathanial Russell built the eponymous house in 1808. Today, the house serves as one of the country’s most important examples of Neoclassical architecture. Open daily, adult admission costs $12.

 

Drayton Hall 

Drayton Hall is the oldest preserved U.S. plantation still open to the public. Built in the mid-1700s, the building is the nation’s oldest example of Palladian architecture. Explore the plantation grounds as well as rotating exhibits of cultural artifacts. Adult admission costs $32. Open daily.

 

Charleston City Market 

The public market as it stands today was built in 1841 as a gathering spot for locals and merchants. Today, vendors sell a variety of local goods and souvenirs daily and during the night market held on Friday and Saturday. The building also houses the city’s Confederate Museum.

 

Old Charleston Jail 

The jail held notorious criminals during its time of operation, 1802–1939. Due to the nature of happenings at the jail, the building is among the most haunted buildings in the city. Learn more on a haunted jail tour.
