Top 5: Kentucky Derby Traditions

The Kentucky Derby is all about tradition and there are a few you won’t want to miss, no matter how far you’ve traveled to the Bluegrass State for this one-of-a-kind sporting event.

The Clothes

Derby parties all over the country require a strict dress code. Ladies, bust out your sundress most befitting a Southern belle and start hat shopping. Pearls aren’t required, but they’re definitely the accessories of choice. While many of the Derby’s most famous attendees commission designer hats for the big day, every department store in the state has a Derby hat display in the spring, so you should be able to find one you love without breaking the bank. For the gentlemen, seersucker suits are preferred, but if you don’t have one hiding away in your closet, any spring suit will do. Bowties are the way to go, particularly in a bold color or pattern.

The Drinks

There’s only one drink you’ll want on Derby day, and that’s a mint julep. Bourbon, ice, water and mint all muddled together in a chilled silver cup is the perfect refreshment for a muggy, summer day. If you’re not attending in person, you can easily make one at home, with your favorite brand of whiskey.

“My Old Kentucky Home”

Every resident knows the words to Stephen Foster’s song, “My Old Kentucky Home,” by heart. The University of Louisville marching band plays the ballad before the race, and respectful attendees rise and sing along.

The Infield

For those who can’t quite afford to mingle with celebrities in the box seats, there’s The Infield. College students abound and the atmosphere is a little less Southern charm and a lot more party. If you’re more interested in the bourbon and the social aspect of the Derby than the actual race and being seen by those who matter most, this is where you want to be. No umbrellas are allowed at the event, though, so be sure to bring sunscreen or a jacket, as well as a comfortable pair of shoes, as you won’t be doing much sitting in The Infield.

Roses

A garland of bright red roses always crowns the winning horse. The rose has become something of a symbol throughout the day, from the décor to the drinks (think Four Roses Bourbon) to an accessory choice for many a hat.
