Tokyo may be most recognized for its ultra-modern buildings and cultural quirks. However, Japan’s capital is also home to a rich history, displayed in its many museums. These are some of our favorites.

Edo-Tokyo Museum

The Edo-Tokyo Museum focuses on the history and culture of Tokyo during the Edo period. In addition to the permanent and special exhibitions, the museum hosts other events, lectures and workshops related to Edo-Tokyo.

 

 

Mori Art Museum

The Mori Art Museum boasts a rotating collection of artwork from contemporary artists. Most artists are of Asian descent. Check the events calendar and exhibition schedule before your visit.

 

 

National Museum of Nature and Science

Opened in 1877 and renovated in the 1990s and early 2000s, the National Museum of Nature and Science is Japan’s only nationally administered comprehensive science museum. Home to more than 4 million specimens, visitors will find a variety of exhibitions, including on Pre-Meiji science.

Samurai Museum

Experience what life was like for a samurai at the Samurai Museum. See traditional body armor and weapons on permanent display. Interactive experiences including calligraphy lessons, a photo shoot with armor and sword battle performances.

 

 

Tokyo National Museum

Established in 1872, the oldest Japanese national museum is also the largest art museum in Japan. The museum is home to more than 110,000 artifacts of art and archeology from Asian countries with a strong focus on Japan. Special exhibits rotate about five times annually.
