One thing the United States can’t necessarily offer that some areas of the world have in spades: castles. More than a staple in fairytales, the world’s castles are something to behold. Here are a few you should add to your must-see list.
Possibly one of the most famous castles, the Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany is worth the hype. Overlooking the small village of Hohenschwangau, this 19th-century castle showcases the region’s stunning mountainous landscape.
Scotland’s iconic castle fortress, Edinburgh Castle is impossible to miss along the skyline of the capital city. Sitting among the rocky landscape, the locale is known as Castle Rock and an impressive piece of history and architecture.
Located in Conwy, Wales, Conwy Castle comes complete with a suspended bridge on the outside and walled town on the inside. The castle dates back to the 1280s and still hosts events and seasonal activities today.
Sitting on the iconic Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is a diamond in Veytaux, Switzerland’s landscape. Partially surrounded by water and lush forests, and snow-peaked mountains in the distance, this locale is a true stunner.
Essentially an island in-and-of itself, Saint Michael’s Mount is an UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. Situated off Normandy’s north western coast, this castle’s walled city and iconic architecture attracts more than 3 million visitors each year.
