San Francisco’s notoriously hilly streets mean there are many viewpoints from which to glimpse angles of this fetching metropolis. It’s not uncommon here to stumble upon an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean, an iconic building or bridge or an entire swath of skyline.
Coit Tower, whose iconic white pillar is set above scenic Telegraph Hill. Spring for admission to the top of the tower, where the views are expansive and unblocked. And look out for the resident parrots flitting about the hill.
Twin Peaks, south of downtown, is worth the hike. You’ll take in panoramic views of the skyline.
Lombard Street, which most people think of for its famously crooked route. But at the top, you’ll not only get to watch people navigate the series of hairpin turns, you’ll also glimpse a view of Coit Tower and the San Francisco Bay.
Ocean Beach, great not only for its rolling surf, but also for its incredible view of the entire span of the Golden Gate Bridge. Come at sunset and watch the bridge glow as the sun sinks on the horizon.
The Powell-Hyde cable car line, because riding the cable car in San Francisco is a must, and this route comes with a view. The 2.1-mile route includes the entire system’s steepest grade (with water views) and tons of iconic architecture to glimpse. Plus, it feels like an amusement park thrill.
