Top 5: Vintage Clothing Shops

I like to check out vintage clothing shops when I visit new cities. Not only to add some unique and classic pieces to my wardrobe, but vintage clothing shops are a great place to find out about local soul nights and ‘60s mod events, which are an excellent alternative to mainstream dance clubs that play disappointing, grating contemporary music.

Urban Village, Birmingham, U.K.

Ok, this is a bit random, as Birmingham is hardly known as a cultural mecca and tourist hub. But this shop, obviously owned by people passionate about vintage clothes, stocks clothes and accessories in shockingly pristine condition. Original Fred Perry shirts, boating blazers, Harrington jackets and white Levi’s jackets, to name but a few. They also carry new stock inspired by vintage fashion, records and collectibles. Items are also available through their online shop that ships free anywhere in England.

Szputnyik Shop D20, Budapest, Hungary

This shop is a bit more sanitized than I think most vintage store fans would like. But it has an excellent selection of vintage with complementary new stock. I think the selection for women has been more thought out versus the men’s section, which mostly features retro concert tee shirts. What I like about it is it has a professional and clean feel to it, is well organized and not dusty and musty like many vintage shops tend to be.

Mr. Throwback, New York City

Not my cup of tea, but the amount of ‘90s sports gear in this store is staggering and has to be admired. Upon entering this store, any kid from the ‘90s will feel like he’s walking into his childhood bedroom, complete with Space Jam figurines, NBA jerseys, starter jackets, Tommy Hilfiger wear and FUBU. The shop is located in the East Village.

Goodwood Revival, West Sussex, England

Ok, so this isn’t technically a vintage shop, but if you happen to be in England during the second weekend of September, the Goodwood Revival is incredible. The main reason people gather at Lord March’s Goodwood Estate is to watch motor racing featuring classic cars with drivers in period dress. But along with the retro bands, vintage cars on display and Champagne tents, there is also a vintage clothing alley, with fashion from the turn of the century right up to the early ‘80s. The Earl of March knows how to throw a party.

In Temple bar, this vintage shop is fun, whimsical and well stocked. The staff is friendly and let you browse uninterrupted. Again, the men’s section isn’t quite as impressive as the selection for women, but that seems to be pretty standard in vintage clothing shops.
