Top Boat Trips in Central America

With both Pacific and Caribbean coastlines as well as lakes and rivers, Central America is great for boat trips.

One of the best is a crossing of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, a mystical body of water ringed by volcanoes. On a clear day the view is truly breathtaking, and you can make the trip multiple times as you visit the various villages around the shore.

Another great lake trip is the 17-kilometer hop from San Jorge to the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. Central America’s largest lake is magnificent, and the island is made up of two volcanoes that make for great photos.

For a true flavor of the Caribbean, take a boat trip around the Belizean cayes. The clear blue water and coral reefs are simply incredible, and there are ample opportunities for snorkeling, diving and fishing.

Down in Honduras, take a ferry from La Ceiba to the island of Utila. It’s a famous scuba diving hub and an affordable place to get diving qualifications. Plus, it’s famous for its raucous nightlife.

Head to Panama to explore the San Blas islands by boat, getting to know the local Kuna Yala indigenous group. From here you can either return to mainland Panama, or continue your boat trip to Colombia and more adventures in South America.
