Greek cooking has been successfully exported around the world, and most people will have tried moussaka, souvlaki and tzatziki at some point in their lives.
At the same time, there is plenty more to Greek cuisine than the old favorites. Take kotosoupa avgolemono (chicken and lemon rice soup), for example, often served as a starter at Greek family meals. Another soup, fassolatha, is regarded as the national dish of Greece. This warming bean soup can be made with tomatoes or white wine.
Don’t leave Greece without trying some spanakopita (spinach pie with cheese), kolokythokeftedes (courgette balls) or dolmades (stuffed vine leaves). If you are into shared plates, Greek cuisine is great as there are seemingly endless appetizers you can order for the table.
Tuck into some feta, graviera or mizithra cheeses, on meat, fried as saganaki or as a topping for the Cretan dakos salad, respectively. For dessert, baklava is a common choice in many restaurants. While this sweet treat is popular back in Greece, it is rivaled by galaktoboureko (custard-filled filo pastry) and melomakarona (honey spice cookies).
Greek cooking is famous for a reason, and you’d be silly not to try some of the traditional dishes. Look out for family-run tavernas or local cafes to get the true flavor of Greece.
