Trans Canada Trail Becomes Longest in the World

In 2017, Canada will open 15,000 miles worth of connected trails.

The Trans Canada Trail will be the longest in the world, made up of a network of paths, canoe routes, urban walks and minor roads. While it might not be a trail in the truest sense of the word, the initiative should encourage people to get out and explore Canada.

A massive map of the available routes is available for download, and shows how the TCT runs the width of the country. In certain sections the trails will be signposted for ease of use, with routes running from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic and the Atlantic.

Work on the TCT began in 1992 and it has been a long road to fruition. Volunteers have come together to help efforts to unite Canada, and the trail will open in 2017 to mark 150 years since the country’s confederation.

Some people in the United States like to take on the so-called Triple Crown of trails, the Pacific Crest, Appalachian and Continental Divide routes. With the TCT, Canada has a trail network which dwarfs each of those.

While most people will dip in and out of the network to explore areas of particular interest to them, there will surely be some adventurers that make the journey across Canada. The only question is who will be the first to do it.
