Flying can be a stressful experience for some people, whether it’s a first-time flyer, someone with anxiety or simply a worrier. It can also be stressful to travel with someone who embodies those traits. Follow our tips for successfully traveling with a nervous flyer.
Be Prepared
Select whichever seat (aisle, window) will make your friend most comfortable. Being completely packed and having a set schedule can help ease the worries of actually getting to the airport. This will start your trip on the right foot.
Stay Positive
Positivity goes a long way. Remind your traveling companion everything will be fine and how exciting it will be to arrive at the destination.
Safety First
Flying is a safe mode of transportation. Reiterate that fact to your friend. If turbulence occurs, tell him or her to watch the flight attendants remaining calm and going about their job as normal.
Breathe
Offer to join him or her in some calming breathing techniques before take-off or in-flight. Focus on conscious, soothing breaths.
Distract Them
Bring plenty of distractions with you. Magazines, book, crossword puzzles and a tablet loaded with games, music and movies will help pass the time.
Make Smart Food and Drink Choices
Encourage your loved one to avoid alcohol and stimulants like coffee or sugary drinks, as these may only heighten anxiety.
