Scandinavia is a great region to journey through as a solo traveler. Sweden, in particular, is a wonderful place to explore by yourself.

Sweden welcomes solo travelers, whether you’re exploring cities and urban areas or venturing to the mountains and wilderness regions of the far north. It’s a particularly great place for solo travelers because of its low crime rate, relative safety even in the backcountry and overall accessibility based on good public transportation and helpfulness of the locals.

Starting your trip in Stockholm is a great idea; you can easily explore the city alone, with activities like sea kayaking on the waters of the archipelago, exploring the city by bike, spending time at its outdoor cafes, taking in the art at the Moderna Museet, shopping and more.

Sweden is a welcoming country. If you need help, locals are always willing to lend a hand and answer questions. They aren’t likely to offer you help if you don’t ask, so don’t be shy in approaching a stranger if you need something.

Sweden’s wild backcountry is wonderful for exploring solo. The far north has mild summers that bring scores of hikers to its trails and wilderness huts. Many people go solo and encounter minimal barriers, as long as you prepare for periods of cold weather, you’re pretty much set.
