Machu Picchu stands tall in the horizon and is easily one of, if not the, most popular destinations in Peru. The ancient archaeological site and city stands as a testament to the power and ingenuity of the Incans. Of course, don’t forget about the famed Easter Island off the coast of Chile, where Polynesian’s built the silent stone figures known as Moai.

Of course, you can always go a little further off the beaten path. In Colombia, discover the grandiose sculptures formed out of volcanic rock by ancient tribes of the river valleys of the Magdalena and Cauca near San Agustín. Further down the road you’ll find Ciudad Perdida, the “Lost City,” but only if you’re willing to traverse one of Colombia’s most beautiful hiking trails — the ruins are only accessible on foot.

The ruins of Ingapirca in Ecuador aren’t the largest in South America, but the tiny archaeological site is a great stopover to witness its temple situated among open fields filled with grazing llamas. It’s also a great access point for a three-day hike known as the Camino del Inca trek, which a breathtaking exploration through some of the country’s finest landscapes.

Wherever you choose to go, there are plenty of ruins to keep you busy. Plot out a path and head off today.
