As Cuba opens up to the outside world, there is increasing interest in the art of the island. If you are interested in finding out more about the art, there is a selection of artists you should keep an eye on. The first is Tania Bruguera, a controversial political artist who explores propaganda in her work.
Another name for the list is Carmen Herrera, a minimalist painter now 101 years old. She lives in New York, and has only recently come to prominence. Younger artists such as Alexandre Arrechea, based in Miami, and Yoan Capote are also worth keeping an eye on.
While many contemporary Cuban artists live away from the island, Kcho is a proud to serve as a local politician when he isn’t producing art. Also worth a mention are Carlos Garaicoa, known for his mixed media work, and Manuel Mendive, an important Afro-Cuban artist.
Whether you are interested in buying works or just seeing what Cuban artists are producing, now is a great time to take an interest in the scene. Havana is a great place for art lovers and you will also find works by Cuban artists in galleries around the world.
