Reviews / Entertainment

Okay, so there is no shortage of shows that seek to explore culinary history and wonders available to stream on any number of outlets. There is every Anthony Bourdain show imaginable, along with Chef’s Table, the British Baking Show and even cooking spoofs like Nailed It. And yet, Ugly Delicious is still unlike all the rest.

The brainchild of chef David Chang, this show seeks to open people’s hearts and minds through food. Through a series of travels and encounters with celebrities, chefs, food historians and David Chang’s own mom, he seeks to unravel the stories of beloved food items like pizza, tacos, fried chicken and home cooking. In eight episodes, each one an hour long, Chang and his band of friends track down the origin story of Taco Bell and try to understand why Italian-American food took off in a way Korean-American cuisine is only just starting to. How do food cultures interact with each other in a melting pot like the United States? And if food cultures can speak to each other, can’t we become a little more open to the prospect of communication?

This is David Chang’s mission, as he sets out to roam the world in search of connection through food. Ugly Delicious is streaming on Netflix.
