Backpacking is a great way to enjoy the solitude and scenery of the backcountry, far from crowds and cell phone signals. But packing everything you need for a day or more away from civilization can quickly become cumbersome, and if your pack is too heavy, it detracts from the experience.

Backpacking technology is improving and gear is becoming lighter. At the same time, new camping gadgets — and a cultural reliance on physical stuff — mean we’re inclined to bring a lot of gear with us when we go. It’s hard to get used to leaving stuff behind and lightening the load.

If you’re able to spend a bit more money, you can opt for lighter gear. These items do come with a bigger price tag, but you’ll save yourself a sore back and likely be able to hike longer, faster. Tents, sleeping bags and pads, stoves, even clothing are trending toward ultra light.

It’s also good to learn which things you can do without. REI has a helpful article on the minimalistic approach to backpacking and new companies like Hyperlite, Antigravity Gear and Gossamer Gear sell items that can help greatly reduce pack weight.
