Under $100 / Latin America

Venezuela is known for its natural wonders, and visitors should not miss out on the capital city of Caracas. After World War II, the country received a wave of European immigrants, developing Caracas into the cosmopolitan center.

Money is a little complicated in Venezuela. It used to be one of the most expensive countries to visit due to an official exchange rate that was 300–400 percent the realistic “parallel rate.” This changed in 2015 when the government switched to their SIMADI, bringing the official rate down and making the country a cheap destination for travelers, though you can get even more value for your dollars by selling them on the black market. The Venezuelan bolívar is subject to immense inflation every year so the market for U.S. dollars is big, but locals say it’s a legal risk so stick with an airport employee or a trusted friend.

If you’re not the outdoorsy type, you should at least see Caracas from the top of Avila. The historic Teleférico was built in 1952 and regularly takes riders 2,600 feet into the air for an amazing view of the city in the south and the Caribbean Sea to the north. There is also a great fondue restaurant you can stop by for lunch. Le Galipanier was one of the first establishments to open after the Teleférico’s completion and it’s one of the best dinners-with-a-view you can get.

After coming back down, take in some of the city’s history before heading out for the night. Plaza Bolívar is Caracas’ most famous public space containing several examples of colonial architecture as well as the statue of Simon Bolívar. Nearby you can see the man’s birthplace at La Casa Natal de Simon Bolivar and learn more about him at the adjacent Museo Bolivariano. Both buildings showcase numerous artifacts and historic memorabilia from the Venezuelan War for Independence.
