Chuckanut Drive winds through a verdant, hilly swath of northwestern Washington. On one side, old growth forests cling to the hillsides of the Chuckanut Mountains, and on the other stretch the vast tidelands of Samish and Bellingham Bay.
The scenic drive passes a state park, several restaurants and a shellfish farm. To start your day, eat breakfast at the quirky former gas station in the charming small town of Edison, at the Edison Café, where you’ll spend about $12.
Heading north, visit Larrabee State Park, where you can hike through old growth forest or pick a trail along the beach. At low tide, you can hunt for sea glass and sand dollars and take in the scenery. It’s $5 to park for the day.
Lunch at Taylor Shellfish on Samish Bay, where there is also a store selling loads of fresh seafood. If you’re into oysters, they sell them here on the half shell, and you can enjoy them on the picnic tables near the water. We’ll budget $10 here, but it depends on how many you eat.
Continuing north, you might spend the rest of your day in the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham shopping, or head south back to Edison, where you can visit a variety of farms to pick up cheese, berries and produce. If you want to eat in town, spend your remaining budget at The Rhody Café, where farm-focused food trends upscale.
