Under $100 / Europe

Cork might be Ireland’s second-largest city, but it’s easily No. 1 in the hearts of many who visit here. The small little municipal has a population of roughly 120,000, but still manages to feel quaint.

Begin your trip with breakfast at Liberty Grill, one of the local favorites, for a serving of their Mediterranean breakfast made up primarily of halloumi on toasted pita. A plate here will cost you roughly $10.

From there, it’s time to seek out the main attraction: Blarney Castle. It houses the famous Blarney Stone, which thousands of guests make the trek up stone stairs to lean out and kiss every year. It sounds a little gross in principle, but it’s a must-do when visiting Ireland. People drive all the way from Dublin just to pucker up.

The lines will be long, so when you’re done kissing and exploring you’ll probably be ready for lunch. The Fish Wife provides light fare, either fish or burgers, for a reasonable price (around $10–15) and is beloved by locals and tourists alike. Make sure to grab a pint while you wait for your food.

Afterwards, indulge in a little bell tolling at the renowned St. Anne’s Church, where visitors are encouraged to climb the tower and ring the Shandon Bells, an age-old tradition. Once done, make your way to the English Market. It’s the oldest of its kind in all of Europe and a fascinating (and large) site to behold. You’ll probably find yourself wanting to buy everything in sight, but try to budget yourself to $30.

If you have time, go ahead and check out the Crawford Gallery, famous for the Canova Casts, a series of plasters casts donated to Cork by the Vatican back in 1818.

For dinner and a relaxing evening (or rowdy, depending on which night you go) of traditional Irish music, you’ll want to check out Sin é. This lively little pub is known for its musical guests and is a great way to experience local Irish culture. A meal here will cost you around $20, maybe more if you drink.
