Under $100 / Europe

Girona sits in the hills of Catalonia, near Barcelona, and offers a tranquil getaway in the fresh air.

Start your day at Artusi, which offers great pastries and coffee for breakfast. It’s found just off the main drag, the Ramblas, and is great for people watching ($10).

Go for a walk around the historic center of town, pausing at the Pont de les Pescateries Velles. It was built by Gustav Eiffel before he turned his attention to the famous Parisian tower that took his name. Complete your walk with a visit to the cathedral, which contains the 11th-century Tapestry of the Creation.

Catalonia is known as a culinary paradise and Girona is a huge part of that. For lunch head to Divinum, where you can experience the local cuisine washed down with a huge range of Catalan wines. A tasting menu will set you back $35 and is worth every penny.

Visit the Jewish History Museum in the afternoon to find out about the influence of the Jewish community on Girona ($4.50). Later on stroll around the picturesque streets before settling down at the Café Royal on Plaça de la Independència for a coffee or a glass of wine.

In the evening dine at Mimolet, which places an emphasis on using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients ($30) before checking out Nykteri’s Cocktail Bar for a couple of digestif drinks ($15).
