Knoxville, Tenn., is usually a city passed through if you do any sort of road trip through the state, but not one that’s often stopped in. However, this little city has plenty to offer for a weekend getaway.

You’ll find a farmer’s market open every month of the year in Knoxville, come rain or shine. Stop by the Market Square Farmer’s Market for a variety of treats produced and made within a 150-mile radius. Treating yourself to breakfast there can be a great way to start your day, where you’ll find an affordable array of options from vendors and food trucks that will easily fit into your budget.

Next, head to the Knoxville Museum of Art, which always offers free admission and features exhibitions on local Tennessean, as well as international, artists. They also hold frequent events and workshops for adults, covering topics for aspiring artists such as alcohol inks and clay masks.

Grab lunch at one of several patio cafés in the downtown area, where you can enjoy regional fare and the company of a furry friend or two at one of the many dog-friendly options. A local favorite is The Tomato Head, serving up creative menu options, many less than $10, for almost two decades.

Take a walk at the site of the 1982 World’s Fair, which the city converted into World’s Fair Park. You’ll see the Sunsphere, created especially for the event, and climb to the top observation deck for free to be treated to a panoramic view of downtown Knoxville, the University of Tennessee campus, the Tennessee River and the Smoky Mountains.

When you’re ready to go out for the night, choose one of the many local breweries. Alliance Brewing Company, Blackhorse Pub & Brewery and Crafty Bastard Brewery are all good options. Looking for something a bit stronger than beer? Head to Knox Whiskey Works. If you’re lucky enough to stop by at the right time, you may even be able to catch a tour.
