Whatever your reason for winding up in the Horse Capital of the World, you’ll find southern hospitality and plenty of southern fun in Lexington, Kentucky.

Start with breakfast or brunch at Doodles, home to organic and locally sourced options. Eat inside or on the intimate patio. Most of the meals are less than $10. Try the Egg Doodle, which features a fresh egg grilled inside of a buttermilk biscuit before being served up alongside cheese grits or fried potatoes.

If you want to see what all the equestrian fuss is about, drive into horse country, specifically to Kentucky Horse Park, where you’ll be treated to what are arguably some of the best views of rolling blue grass set against classic Kentucky white fences. If you’re visiting in the spring, be sure to watch for the adorable foals. Included in admission ($12) is entrance to the International Museum of the Horse and the American Saddlebred Museum.

To explore some Kentucky history in a picturesque setting, head to Shaker Village. You can explore the museum, working farm, stables and nature trails, all of which celebrate the Shaker heritage. Stay for lunch at The Trustees’ Table, which serves up options straight from the farm, including sandwiches, salads and their savory country tart, all for less than $15.

Cap the day with a tour of Lexington’s favorite local brewery, West Sixth. The tour will give you an inside look at the sustainable operation, which also happens to host a roller derby on certain nights of the week. End with a frosty pint of the West Sixth IPA or the Lemongrass American Wheat.
