The charming town of Montpellier sits on the Mediterranean coast of France, just two hours west of the bustling port town of Marseille. This easy daytrip is a pleasant and welcome getaway from the crowds of Marseille as Montpellier allows visitors to connect with the daily life of the locals and explore the history of Southern France.
Start your journey with a cup of French coffee and a pastry at the small yet cozy Coffee Club along Rue Saint-Guilhem. After a caffeine boost, head west on foot to view the massive Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, and if you´re lucky, head inside for glimpses of the stained-glass windows and the larger-than-life organ pipes.
Just outside the cathedral is the Jardin des Plantes where a collection of some of the world´s most beautiful flora and fauna can be found. A bamboo forest, charming fountains and walking paths make for a pleasant afternoon among nature.
Less than 10 minutes on foot to the east of the garden is an affordable and adorable crêperie: Les Casseroles en Folie. Sample the menu du jour or for €10, enjoy a custom-made crêpe and a glass of wine or cider.
An afternoon in Montpellier can be spent strolling through the historic city center and marveling at the centuries-old buildings. Adventurous travelers may choose to endure the city´s most popular activity: a hike up to Pic Saint Loup. Just an hour up the hill is the pinnacle from which you can see all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. Reward yourself with dinner and local wines at one of the surrounding restaurants.
