Getting to the isolated Pitcairn Island is expensive in itself, so you certainly don’t want to break the bank exploring it. Luckily, most of the things worth seeing here are completely free. You’ll just have to bring your own meals.
Restaurants are few and far between on Pitcairn Island, so be sure to grab a bite on the ship if you’re part of a cruise or pack along a sandwich or two before you arrive. If you’re lucky, one of the locals will invite you in for a quick meal.
You can easily kill an entire morning taking in the sights along the Eco Trail. The trail is a bush walk mostly cleared, allowing you to discover much of the island’s natural habitat and species. Along the way there are massive, rocky outcrops that overlook the ocean, as well as plants with nasty spines, so bring appropriate clothing. At the end you’ll find Christian’s Cave, a former retreat of Fletcher Christian, the man who sunk the Bounty ship just offshore.
Head for a slice of pizza at Andy’s Pizzeria. For such an isolated restaurant, the Italian eats are surprisingly good. Expect to drop $20 for a meal.
Next you’ll want to visit the Pitcairn Island Museum. The building is a treasure trove of naval artifacts and memorabilia from Pitcairn’s early settlement. Entrance is only $5, but you might need to call ahead to get them to open.
From there head to St. Paul’s Pool, a tidal pool by the sea great for swimming and snorkeling. Afterward, make your way down to Down Rope, a sandy beach located at the base of a 700-foot cliff. Here you’ll find incredible Polynesian petroglyphs to view for free.
Finally, end with dinner from your backpack or on the ship you floated in on.
